Say Hi

Seattle, WA

Formerly known as Say Hi To Your Mom, here's an act that seems to keep getting better with each album. I have to admit - The Wishes And The Glitch really sneaked up on me this year because I was still riding high on tunes from last year's Impeccable Blahs (and because it's not officially out til February '08). With Eric Elbogen as the backbone of Say Hi, the band will play Black Cat tonight. The A-Sides and The Velvet Teen are opening bands, and it all starts after 9pm.

Murder Mystery

New York, NY

Here's a great band name for the Halloween season. According to their MySpace page, Murder Mystery will be playing here in DC tomorrow night with The Bravery at 9:30 (including a costume contest!). Then they'll make it back for a show with Girl Talk at Hoya Court on Saturday, November 17.

Róisín Murphy

Sheffield, England

Just look at that picture. Out of her mind... and we love it! Apparently Róisín hit her head and broke a bone above her eye while performing in Moscow on Saturday night. I'm sure she'll be fine. I just hope it didn't knock any of the crazy out of her. The new disc Overpowered is on repeat for me at the moment. I think I even like it better than her first solo effort.

Small Sins

Toronto, ON

I didn't have time to see Small Sins at Black Cat last night, but it's definitely not because I don't love these guys. I'm totally infatuated with Mood Swings right now, and this is one of my favorite songs on that album.

Ravens And Chimes

New York, NY

Sadly I didn't have time to catch this band (at The Red & The Black) last night either. Hopefully they'll make it back around soon.

tonight: Pash

One of the toughest things about living in a great area like DC is trying to decide which shows to attend on any given evening. Tonight I have at least four options, so I'm going to try to hit all I possibly can. Pash is playing a cozy show at The Red & The Black with Ben Britten and Ravens And Chimes. As you can see from the flyer above, this one is 21+ and begins around 9pm.

tonight: Annuals

Taking the stage tonight at one of my favorite places in DC is Annuals. They'll be at Rock & Roll Hotel with Manchester Orchestra and fellow North Carolina band The Never. This show is kind of an early one. Doors are 7pm.

Opening act Yoav will be going on at 7:35 and Tori will take the stage around 8:15. I can't believe it's been almost five years since I last saw Tori live - at The Chicago Theater the day after Thanksgiving 2002. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited! Should be a great way to start the weekend.

I had the great fortune of checking out the super sexy San Francisco band LoveLikeFire at Galaxy Hut last night. The band played for a packed house and the set was about as perfect as I could imagine. To any of my Chicago friends reading this - please head out to Schubas tonight to support LoveLikeFire. Last night after the show here they were driving 14 hours to get there!

BOAT presents 'A Month Of Covers'

BOAT is seeking bandsand individuals to cover their songs. All entries will be accepted/posted/celebrated on BOAT's website over the next month. There is nowrong way to cover BOAT. Use instruments, don't use instruments. Use your voice, use your friend's voice. Use your friend's wife's voice. Use a taperecorder/iPod memo recorder/4track/Garage band/your friend's computer. No entry will be turned away.

Then take your cover and a picture of yourself and e-mail it as a yousendit file to (boat at ohnodisaster dot com).

The deadline will be November 15. All the entries will be posted with a picture of the person/persons responsible for the cover on BOAT's site throughout the next month. At the end of the month BOAT will be making a limited edition handmade compilation CD of all the entries that will include homemade comic artwork made by the band. Just by entering, you guarantee yourself a free copy of the compilation CD.

So get started. Choose any song from BOAT's back catalog. Not familiar with BOAT's back catalog you say? Who is BOAT? Why do they believe you would be willing to cover their songs? You can check out BOAT's site at www.ohnodisaster.com/boat or www.myspace.com/boatmusic. Then e-mail the band at (boat at ohnodisaster dot com) and they will send you a specific song to learn and cover. Any questions should be sent to (boat at ohnodisaster dot com). Lisa D'Amato - Ace Of Spades

You should remember Lisa as the ultra fun girl from Cycle 5 of ANTM, but I bet you didn't know she was such the musical gem. Here's her first video, "Ace Of Spades." This is not the finished version, but I couldn't wait to share. The lyrics could use some work, but I really do enjoy the music and the vocals. You can judge for yourself.

tonight: The Alphabetical Order

Please come out to Black Cat tonight and support the CD release show for my friends in The Alphabetical Order. Red Racer will be opening and it all starts after 9:00. Backstage event, only $5.
