Lightspeed Champion
Lightspeed Champion is the solo work of Devonte Hynes, formerly of Test Icicles, but this material sounds nothing like the chaotic rock he's made in the past. Falling Off The Lavender Bridge was actually recorded in Omaha with Saddle Creek producer Mike Mogis and is getting a release date from Domino here in the US in one week.
The Whigs
Unfortunately I didn't get to see The Whigs on Letterman last night. Good news though! Like everything else these days, the performance is on YouTube! Check it out below.
Chris Walla
I've never been the biggest Death Cab For Cutie fan, but I was super impressed with what Chris Walla did last year for Tegan And Sara's The Con. Comparing that record to their previous material really proves that your producer matters. Now Chris is back with his own solo record Field Manual, out today from Barsuk.
Xiu Xiu
Women As Lovers kind of sneaked up on me. It's available today, but I didn't notice all that much press about the album. "No Friend Oh!" is one of my favorites on it.
Cassettes Won't Listen
Small-Time Machine is the first physical release from Jason Drake (Casseettes Won't Listen). He's releasing it on his own March 11, and this is the opening track.

The Main Drag
Here's some great indie rock that reminds me of bands like Bound Stems and Annuals.
These New Puritans
At first I didn't think These New Puritans were going to be my cup of tea. However, now I'm pretty much addicted to them. Beat Pyramid is out today in the UK but not getting a release date here in the States until March 18, courtesy of Domino.
HIJK
The guys of HIJK say they get inspiration from Bloc Party, Pinback, Metric, and Modest Mouse. Chances are if you like these bands, you'll enjoy them too.
Evangelicals
The Evening Descends is the second album from Evangelicals and it's available now from Dead Oceans, which consistently impresses me. Catch this lively bunch when they tour through your city with Headlights.

Dave Fischoff remixes Jens Lekman
Dave Fischoff has started doing some remixing under the name Spoolwork. Right now he's featuring his interpretation of "I'm Leaving You Because I Don't Love You" by Jens Lekman. Listen to it at the Spoolwork MySpace page. I'm really looking forward to hearing more from Dave!

tonight: black cat
Please come out tonight to the best "locals" show we've had in a while around DC - the CD release show for Jukebox The Ghost at Black Cat. Also playing will be Bellman Barker and my personal favorite Pash. It's all starting sometime after 9pm on the mainstage and tickets are only $10.

Velella Velella
I had heard of Velella Velella here and there over the past couple of years, but I have WOXY.com to thank for truly turning me on to their latest EP, Flight Cub.
Kill Krinkle Club
I get new music from unsigned artists all the time and I wonder "How the hell hasn't a fancy label discovered this talent yet?" That's definitely the case with Kill Krinkle Club. Their EP is on my daily regular rotation and I think you'll love them too if you enjoy music like Bat For Lashes.
Neon Neon
I don't know much from Neon Neon, but "Raquel" is one of the friskiest tracks I'm listening to these days.
Hot Chip
This group doesn't need my endorsement, but I'm giving it anyway. The hottest thing in the music blog world right now seems to be Hot Chip, and after listening to their third full-length, I completely understand why. Made In The Dark is out via Astralwerks on February 5, and here's the title track.
Kentucky Nightmare
Kentucky Nightmare didn't get their name from their state since they actually reside in Indiana. It comes from an episode of the animated spoof talk show Space Ghost Coast To Coast. The band's second release, Take Her Favour, is available now.

Jade McNelis
So young and so good! Jade McNelis is the latest signing to Chop Shop Records. All The Fables is already out on the Canadian label Good Fences, but Chop Shop will help bring Jade's refreshing sound to the rest of the world. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves artists like Ingrid Michaelson.
The Hibernauts
I like The Hibernauts more and more with every listen.
Two Hours Traffic
This band appears to be touring and whoring all over Canada in February and March.

Nyles Lannon
Prior to 2007 Nyles Lannon went by simply n. Lannon. On the latest disc, Pressure, he's taken time out from his band Film School to wow us yet again. Recommended if you like singer/songwriters like Cass McCombs.
Atlas Sound
Surprisingly relaxing music from Bradford Cox of Deerhunter.

I'm not obsessed with any other song right now like I am with this title track from The Helio Sequence. Their new album is out on Tuesday from Sub Pop.

Hello, Blue Roses
A duo we're all supposed to eat up like cotton candy 'cause Dan Bejar is part of it.

Ruby Isle covers Headlights
(taken from kindercore.com)
Ruby Isle - Cherry Tulips
As luck would have it, we were in the middle of remixing Headlights’ “Put us Back Together Right” for their upcoming remix album and their track “Cherry Tulips” went to #1 on elbo.ws. Needless to say it has been quite a Headlights week for us. We were really happy to see them at number one because we are actually pretty good friends and it is great to get to cover one of our friend’s songs! Here is what Mark had to say about the track:
“We all spend a lot of time trying to figure out what songs are about. My friend, Lisa, got all bent up cause tulips don’t grow on trees. I said “The singer is using her artistic license. She is so in love with this person that she wants to all the cherry trees to blossom fat red tulips.” This woman, Erin Fein, is pining all night for Cherry Tulips. But, there are no such things - she is overcome with a reckless abandon, and there is an earth shattering hurricane of
cuteness. What will she do? She wants the whole sea! And if she does in fact get it, where will the cherry dolphins swim?
Structurally, the tune follows a straight forward major chord progression with a minor 6 thrown in for good measure. The middle of the tune is host to a turnaround at the 4th and 5th then back to the refrain. Combine that with the 108bpm March in double time and its aural heroine time. I flirted for a while with dropping this cover into the relative minor, as an example of how chords account for 50% of the narrative in a lyric, but I was feeling bittersweet about our covers project coming due, so I scrapped it. On a production level, this tune comes closest to the Beach House song we covered earlier in the project, real gooey and wet, all verbed out and what not. Our version is sped up, sort of, to 120. The feel of the song totally changed when the drums were cut to half time - that’s probably the most dramatic change in the song. Oh, and the original doesn’t have a telephone solo in it either! Thank you, Headlights, for writing such a lovely song for us to cover. Maybe I’ll write a song called Cherry Dolphins. hmmm.”
As I said, I was just putting the finishing touches on the remix as this one went number one so it was very easy for me to transition over to the new track. I actually didn’t listen to the original before I started working on the cover. I figured remixing them would give me enough of the sound I needed to create the backdrop for the cover. Mark sent me guitar and vocals and I built a simple little pop song around them. This is probably the most straightforward of all of our covers and is actually probably the most “kindercore” song ruby isle has ever recorded. Mark’s little addition of “Road to Nowhere” was a pleasant suprise to me as Mark and I grew up listening to Talking Heads records together. It was really fun to throw in that little treat. Actually, ever cover in this series actually references another song aside from the cover we are doing. If you are bored it could be a fun little game to go back and listen to all of them and find the secrets…

Hardly Art signs
The Dutchess & The Duke
The Dutchess & The Duke
The wonderful label Hardly Art (home of Le Loup and Arthur & Yu) has just signed The Dutchess & the Duke, a duo local to Seattle. The pair consists of Jesse Lortz and Kimberly Morrison, who have been involved in a number of punk/garage groups around town, including the Fe Fi Fo Fums, the Intelligence, the Unnatural Helpers, and the Sultanas. Hardly Art will be putting out the band's first album sometime later this year, but for now you can stream some tracks at their MySpace page.

finally: Martina Topley Bird
(Offficial Press Release)
March 3 sees the release of the first single from solo artist Martina Topley Bird’s new album The Blue God. Re-emerging as one of the most exciting propositions in sophisticated pop music today, Martina has once again realigned the goal posts and created a new album dosed in natural style and beautiful lyrics. Martina turns an experienced hand to today’s current climate of bubblegum female pop, and the hugely exciting new album shows her at her creative zenith.
The Blue God is produced by long time friend Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, The Grey Album) – Danger Mouse (real name Brian Burton) and Martina got to know each other whilst they were both living in Los Angeles in 2003 and he’s wanted to work with her ever since. Only in the past year could they find the enough time to spend together, and the results are superb.
Martina’s distinctive vocal style coupled with Dangermouse’s signature production, results in a hypnotic combination: the pair have produced a sound that resonates the glamour and feel of Golden-era Hollywood, but with a distinctly modern edge that Danger Mouse’s production brings.
This is music that recalls Vangelis’ otherworldly pop on the Blade Runner soundtrack, where the combination real instruments (Billie Holiday pianos, tremolo guitars, bass high in the mix) are given texture and space backed by electronic samples and soundscapes to starling effect. "Carnies," the first single from this new album demonstrates this perfectly.
See Martina live throughout London in February.
tonight: MGMT
I'm not really sure how a Backstage show at Black Cat becomes sold out - didn't think there was a pre-sale for these shows. Anyhow, the MGMT/Yeasayer show tonight is sold out! Apparently there's some kind of online movement to try and get this one moved to the mainstage so more people can go. There are links below for everyone online who's written about it. Hope all of this helps!

Congratulations!
(Official Press Release)
Charlotte Martin and producer/mixer/artist, Ken Andrews, are expecting their first born in late April of 2008. The couple married in September of 2005, and have since been touring and recording non-stop. Now the couple is preparing for the arrival of their new baby boy.
Andrews' most recent release is a live album, Live (Secrets Of The Lost Satellite Tour, Spring 2007). The album was recorded during his Secrets Of The Lost Satellite spring tour last year and features songs spanning Andrews' career from Failure to current. Ken is also known for his production and mixing work with such famed acts as Beck, Tenacious D, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
Martin's latest album is a studio album of covers [Reproductions] ranging from the piano-driven ballad "Just Like Heaven" (originally recorded by The Cure) to her enticingly brooding rendition of "Angel" (originally recorded by Massive Attack). Reproductions is a conceptual album dealing with the loss, pain, and hope surrounding the couple's miscarriage in 2007. Billboard praises, "Martin authentically conveys the feeling of longing with imploring vocals, letting her sweetly feminine tone propel the lyric of desire."
A companion piece to Martin's Reproductions is the emotionally stimulating music video for "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" (originally recorded by Pearl Jam) directed by Peter Dawson. The video, much like the album, is an emotional journey in dealing with the loss of a child.
Live (Secrets of the Lost Satellite Tour, Spring 2007) and Reproductions are now available on Amazon, iTunes, Musictoday, and most digital music retailers.

Headlights
Some Racing, Some Stopping is the new album from Headlights, and it'll be available from Polyvinyl on February 19. I had high hopes for this one, and I haven't been let down. Although the band's first full-length was in my top five of 2006, this one is definitely more cohesive. For me, the standout tracks are "Market Girl," "School Boys," and "Towers." Headlights has an extensive tour schedule lined up (as always), playing this time around with Evangelicals. On February 21 they'll be at Iota, which is one of my favorite live venues here in the DC area.
