Lightspeed Champion

London, England

Lightspeed Champion is the solo work of Devonte Hynes, formerly of Test Icicles, but this material sounds nothing like the chaotic rock he's made in the past. Falling Off The Lavender Bridge was actually recorded in Omaha with Saddle Creek producer Mike Mogis and is getting a release date from Domino here in the US in one week.

Chris Walla

Portland, OR

I've never been the biggest Death Cab For Cutie fan, but I was super impressed with what Chris Walla did last year for Tegan And Sara's The Con. Comparing that record to their previous material really proves that your producer matters. Now Chris is back with his own solo record Field Manual, out today from Barsuk.

Women As Lovers kind of sneaked up on me. It's available today, but I didn't notice all that much press about the album. "No Friend Oh!" is one of my favorites on it.

Ruby Isle covers Headlights

(taken from kindercore.com)

Ruby Isle - Cherry Tulips

As luck would have it, we were in the middle of remixing Headlights’ “Put us Back Together Right” for their upcoming remix album and their track “Cherry Tulips” went to #1 on elbo.ws. Needless to say it has been quite a Headlights week for us. We were really happy to see them at number one because we are actually pretty good friends and it is great to get to cover one of our friend’s songs! Here is what Mark had to say about the track:

“We all spend a lot of time trying to figure out what songs are about. My friend, Lisa, got all bent up cause tulips don’t grow on trees. I said “The singer is using her artistic license. She is so in love with this person that she wants to all the cherry trees to blossom fat red tulips.” This woman, Erin Fein, is pining all night for Cherry Tulips. But, there are no such things - she is overcome with a reckless abandon, and there is an earth shattering hurricane of
cuteness. What will she do? She wants the whole sea! And if she does in fact get it, where will the cherry dolphins swim?

Structurally, the tune follows a straight forward major chord progression with a minor 6 thrown in for good measure. The middle of the tune is host to a turnaround at the 4th and 5th then back to the refrain. Combine that with the 108bpm March in double time and its aural heroine time. I flirted for a while with dropping this cover into the relative minor, as an example of how chords account for 50% of the narrative in a lyric, but I was feeling bittersweet about our covers project coming due, so I scrapped it. On a production level, this tune comes closest to the Beach House song we covered earlier in the project, real gooey and wet, all verbed out and what not. Our version is sped up, sort of, to 120. The feel of the song totally changed when the drums were cut to half time - that’s probably the most dramatic change in the song. Oh, and the original doesn’t have a telephone solo in it either! Thank you, Headlights, for writing such a lovely song for us to cover. Maybe I’ll write a song called Cherry Dolphins. hmmm.”

As I said, I was just putting the finishing touches on the remix as this one went number one so it was very easy for me to transition over to the new track. I actually didn’t listen to the original before I started working on the cover. I figured remixing them would give me enough of the sound I needed to create the backdrop for the cover. Mark sent me guitar and vocals and I built a simple little pop song around them. This is probably the most straightforward of all of our covers and is actually probably the most “kindercore” song ruby isle has ever recorded. Mark’s little addition of “Road to Nowhere” was a pleasant suprise to me as Mark and I grew up listening to Talking Heads records together. It was really fun to throw in that little treat. Actually, ever cover in this series actually references another song aside from the cover we are doing. If you are bored it could be a fun little game to go back and listen to all of them and find the secrets…

finally: Martina Topley Bird

(Offficial Press Release)

March 3 sees the release of the first single from solo artist Martina Topley Bird’s new album The Blue God. Re-emerging as one of the most exciting propositions in sophisticated pop music today, Martina has once again realigned the goal posts and created a new album dosed in natural style and beautiful lyrics. Martina turns an experienced hand to today’s current climate of bubblegum female pop, and the hugely exciting new album shows her at her creative zenith.

The Blue God is produced by long time friend Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, The Grey Album) – Danger Mouse (real name Brian Burton) and Martina got to know each other whilst they were both living in Los Angeles in 2003 and he’s wanted to work with her ever since. Only in the past year could they find the enough time to spend together, and the results are superb.

Martina’s distinctive vocal style coupled with Dangermouse’s signature production, results in a hypnotic combination: the pair have produced a sound that resonates the glamour and feel of Golden-era Hollywood, but with a distinctly modern edge that Danger Mouse’s production brings.

This is music that recalls Vangelis’ otherworldly pop on the Blade Runner soundtrack, where the combination real instruments (Billie Holiday pianos, tremolo guitars, bass high in the mix) are given texture and space backed by electronic samples and soundscapes to starling effect. "Carnies," the first single from this new album demonstrates this perfectly.

See Martina live throughout London in February.

(Official Press Release)

Charlotte Martin and producer/mixer/artist, Ken Andrews, are expecting their first born in late April of 2008. The couple married in September of 2005, and have since been touring and recording non-stop. Now the couple is preparing for the arrival of their new baby boy.

Andrews' most recent release is a live album, Live (Secrets Of The Lost Satellite Tour, Spring 2007). The album was recorded during his Secrets Of The Lost Satellite spring tour last year and features songs spanning Andrews' career from Failure to current. Ken is also known for his production and mixing work with such famed acts as Beck, Tenacious D, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Martin's latest album is a studio album of covers [Reproductions] ranging from the piano-driven ballad "Just Like Heaven" (originally recorded by The Cure) to her enticingly brooding rendition of "Angel" (originally recorded by Massive Attack). Reproductions is a conceptual album dealing with the loss, pain, and hope surrounding the couple's miscarriage in 2007. Billboard praises, "Martin authentically conveys the feeling of longing with imploring vocals, letting her sweetly feminine tone propel the lyric of desire."

A companion piece to Martin's Reproductions is the emotionally stimulating music video for "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" (originally recorded by Pearl Jam) directed by Peter Dawson. The video, much like the album, is an emotional journey in dealing with the loss of a child.

Live (Secrets of the Lost Satellite Tour, Spring 2007) and Reproductions are now available on Amazon, iTunes, Musictoday, and most digital music retailers.
